Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular skip size?
The 8 yard skip is the most popular choice for UK homeowners. It holds 60–80 bin bags and is large enough for a full house clearance, loft conversion, or significant renovation project, yet compact enough to fit on most driveways and residential streets.
Can I mix different types of waste in a skip?
Yes — general household waste, garden waste, furniture, and most building materials can all go in together. However, certain items are prohibited regardless of skip size: asbestos, tyres, paint cans, batteries, electrical items (WEEE), fridges/freezers, and hazardous chemicals. If in doubt, call us and we will advise.
What happens if my skip is overfilled?
Skips must not be filled above the top rim — this is a legal requirement for safe road transport. If a skip is overfilled when our driver arrives for collection, we will ask you to remove the excess waste before we can take it. Overfilling can result in the skip not being collected on the agreed date, so always aim to leave a few inches of space at the top.
How long can I keep a skip?
Our standard hire period is 7 days, which suits most projects. We also offer 14-day hire at a small surcharge. If you need the skip for longer, just call us and we can arrange an extended hire — we are flexible and understand that renovation projects do not always run to schedule.
Do I need a permit for a skip on my driveway?
No — if the skip is placed entirely on your private driveway or private land, no permit is needed. A permit is only required when the skip is placed on a public highway, road, or pavement. Permits typically cost £50–80 and must be arranged with the local council before delivery. We can handle this for you — just let us know when booking.
