What is Domestic Skip Hire?
Domestic skip hire covers all skip sizes designed for household use — typically 4, 6 and 8 yard skips. These sizes can handle everything from a small bedroom clear-out to a full house clearance. They sit comfortably on most UK driveways and are collected once you have finished filling them.
Whether you are tackling a loft conversion, ripping out an old kitchen, clearing a garden that has become overgrown, or decluttering before a house move, a domestic skip is the most cost-effective and convenient waste removal option.

Disposing of Household Waste Responsibly
All waste collected by our licensed partners is handled in compliance with UK waste regulations. Recyclable materials are sorted at the transfer station — typically 80–90% of domestic skip contents can be recycled or recovered. For guidance on what you can and cannot dispose of, see the Environment Agency waste disposal guidelines.
Domestic Skip Hire FAQs
What skip sizes are best for domestic jobs?
For most domestic jobs a 4 yard or 6 yard skip is the ideal choice. A 4 yard skip holds around 35–45 bin bags and suits a single-room clearance or bathroom refit. A 6 yard skip (50–60 bin bags) is the most popular all-round domestic size — big enough for a kitchen refit or loft clear-out. An 8 yard skip is the right step up if you are doing a full house clearance or large garden project.
Can I put garden waste in a domestic skip?
Yes. Garden waste — grass cuttings, leaves, branches, hedge trimmings and plant pots — is accepted in a general domestic skip. However, if your skip will also contain heavy inert materials such as soil or rubble, let us know when you book because weight limits apply. Dedicated green-waste skips can be arranged for large garden clearances at a reduced rate.
Do I need a permit if the skip goes on my driveway?
No permit is needed if the skip is placed entirely on private land such as your driveway. A skip permit is only required when the skip must sit on a public road or pavement. Permits are issued by your local council, typically cost £50–80, and take 5–7 working days. We can arrange the permit on your behalf — just mention it when you request your quote.
How long can I keep a domestic skip?
Standard domestic hire periods are 7–14 days. Most quotes include 7 days as standard with the option to extend for a small daily fee. If you need the skip for a longer project — for example a loft conversion that runs over several weeks — we can arrange extended hire from the start so there are no surprises.
What items can I not put in a domestic skip?
The following items cannot go in any skip: asbestos, tyres, fridges and freezers (they contain refrigerants requiring specialist disposal), televisions and monitors, paint tins containing liquid paint, gas cylinders, medical waste, and any hazardous chemicals. If you are unsure about a specific item, ask our team before filling the skip. Prohibited items discovered at the weighbridge will result in additional removal charges.
What Homeowners Say About Our Domestic Skips
Real reviews from customers who used a domestic skip for home projects
"We used a 6 yard skip for a full loft conversion clear-out — decades of accumulated furniture and boxes gone in a week. The driver was careful positioning it on the driveway and came to collect exactly when we called. Brilliant service from start to finish."
"Had the kitchen and bathroom stripped out at the same time. Went for an 8 yard skip which was just right. Ordered online, skip arrived next morning, collected two days later when we rang. Easy and great value — will definitely use again for the garden project."
