What Goes in a Builders Skip?
Builders skips handle construction, renovation and demolition waste — the most common materials being broken bricks, rubble, concrete, sand, plasterboard, timber offcuts, roof tiles, window frames and mixed fitout waste. These materials are substantially heavier than domestic household waste, which is why contractors order builders skips in 8, 10 and 12 yard sizes with specific weight limits stated per hire. Knowing the weight limits before you load is critical — mixed loads that breach the limit at the weighbridge attract surcharges that can exceed the original hire cost.
The most important rule for construction waste: keep soil, rubble and concrete separate from light mixed waste wherever possible. Heavy inert materials can fill the weight allowance of an 8 yard skip before the container is visually more than half full. We advise on the right skip type and weight limits when you book, so there are no surprises on collection day.

Construction Waste Accepted in Builders Skips
Most non-hazardous construction materials are accepted. Here is a breakdown of what goes where.
Bricks & Rubble
Broken bricks, mortar, masonry and demolition rubble are accepted but must be treated as heavy inert material. An 8 yard skip can exceed its weight limit with rubble before it looks full, so separating from light waste is strongly recommended. We advise on the right skip type at the time of booking.
Concrete
Broken concrete slabs, foundations, fence posts and screed are accepted but carry significant weight per volume. For large concrete volumes — more than 3–4 tonnes — a dedicated concrete-only skip is more cost-effective and avoids hitting weight limits before the skip looks full. Ask about concrete-only hire when you book.
Timber & Wood
Structural timber, floorboards, joists, studwork, doors, skirting, window frames and roof battens are all accepted in standard builders skips. Treated timber and painted wood can be mixed with other construction waste in most circumstances. Railway-type timber sleepers may attract a small surcharge — confirm when booking.
Plasterboard
Plasterboard must be kept separate from general construction waste under Environment Agency regulations — when mixed with other waste at landfill, it produces hydrogen sulphide gas, a serious environmental hazard. Dedicated plasterboard-only skips are available, or a surcharge applies to standard skips where contamination is identified. Always declare plasterboard loads when booking.
Soil & Excavation
Clean topsoil and virgin subsoil are accepted subject to weight limits. Contaminated soil — from brownfield sites, forecourts or visibly chemically affected areas — requires specialist disposal by a licensed hazardous waste contractor. If you are unsure about soil contamination at your site, contact us before booking.
Mixed Construction Waste
General fitout waste — insulation batts, cabling, plastic pipework, floor tiles, wall tiles, plaster and mixed non-hazardous materials — can be mixed freely in a builders skip. This is the most common load type for renovation and fitout projects. If the load also contains heavy items like rubble, it is better to use a dedicated skip for each material type.
Construction Waste Disposal — Know the Rules
Construction waste is one of the most tightly regulated waste streams in the UK. Asbestos — in any form, including textured ceiling coatings, floor tiles, pipe insulation and roofing felt — must be removed by a licensed asbestos removal contractor before any skip is loaded. It is a criminal offence to dispose of asbestos in a standard skip, and carriers have the right to refuse loads and charge additional handling fees for contaminated waste. All our partner carriers hold current Environment Agency waste carrier licences and issue compliant waste transfer notes with every collection. See the Environment Agency waste disposal guidelines for full regulatory detail on construction waste.
Builders Skip Hire FAQs
Can you mix soil and rubble with general construction waste in the same skip?
It is strongly advised against. Heavy inert materials like soil, rubble and concrete weigh significantly more per cubic metre than light general waste, causing the skip to exceed its weight limit before it looks full — triggering weighbridge surcharges. Use a dedicated inert-waste skip for heavy materials where possible.
What is the weight limit on a builders skip?
A rough rule of thumb is 1 tonne per yard of skip size. An 8 yard builders skip typically has a weight limit of 6–8 tonnes. Heavy materials like concrete, bricks and soil hit the weight limit long before the skip looks full. Overfilling or exceeding the weight limit at the weighbridge results in additional charges.
Does plasterboard need to go in a separate skip?
Yes. Plasterboard must be kept separate from general waste under UK regulations because it produces hydrogen sulphide gas when mixed with other waste at landfill. Many suppliers charge a surcharge for plasterboard in a standard skip, or require a dedicated plasterboard-only hire. Ask about plasterboard disposal when you book.
What size skip do I need for a renovation or self-build?
A 10–12 yard builders skip handles most full renovations and rear extensions. For a self-build, a rolling hire arrangement works best — start with a 10–12 yard for groundwork and structural phases, then switch to 8 yard skips for fit-out. Large sites may benefit from a RORO skip instead.
What materials cannot go in a builders skip?
Asbestos, tyres, gas cylinders, hazardous chemicals, solvent-based paints, fluorescent tubes and clinical waste are all banned. Asbestos must be removed by a licensed contractor before any skip is loaded — it is illegal to dispose of it in a standard skip. Plasterboard requires a dedicated skip or attracts a surcharge.
