What Goes in a Builders Skip?

Builders skips handle construction, renovation and demolition waste. Specifically, the most common materials include broken bricks, rubble, concrete, sand, plasterboard, timber offcuts, roof tiles, window frames and mixed fitout waste. These materials are heavier than domestic waste, which is why contractors order builders skips in 8, 10 and 12 yard sizes with specific weight limits per hire.

Important note: soil and rubble should be kept separate from light mixed waste where possible — mixed loads that exceed the weight limit at the weighbridge attract surcharges. Furthermore, we always advise customers on weight limits when they book.

Construction Waste Accepted in Builders Skips

Most non-hazardous construction materials are accepted. Here is a breakdown of what goes where.

Bricks & Rubble

Broken bricks, mortar, masonry and general rubble. Best kept separate from light waste due to weight.

Concrete

Broken concrete slabs, posts and footings. Very heavy — dedicated concrete skips available for large volumes.

Timber & Wood

Structural timber, floorboards, joists, doors, skirting and window frames all accepted.

Plasterboard

Must be kept separate. Dedicated plasterboard skips or a surcharge applies — ask when booking.

Soil & Excavation

Clean topsoil and subsoil accepted. Contaminated soil requires specialist disposal — let us know.

Mixed Construction Waste

General fitout waste — insulation, cabling, pipework, tiles and mixed non-hazardous materials.

Construction Waste Disposal — Know the Rules

Construction waste is tightly regulated in the UK. For example, asbestos requires removal by a licensed contractor before any skip is loaded — it cannot go in a standard skip under any circumstances. For full guidance on legal construction waste disposal, see the Environment Agency waste disposal guidelines. All our partner carriers hold current waste carrier licences and provide waste transfer notes.

Builders Skip Hire FAQs

Can I mix soil and general construction waste in the same skip?

It is strongly advised not to mix heavy inert materials such as soil, rubble and concrete with light general waste. Since inert materials weigh significantly more per cubic metre than general waste, mixing them can cause the skip to exceed its weight limit mid-hire. Excess weight charges apply. However, if you have both types of waste, ask about a segregated hire arrangement — it is usually more cost-effective and ensures proper recycling of each material.

Are there weight limits on builders skips?

Yes. All skips have a maximum permitted weight — typically 1 tonne per yard of skip size as a rule of thumb. An 8 yard builders skip has a typical weight limit of 6–8 tonnes. Therefore, if you are disposing of heavy materials such as concrete, bricks or soil, you hit the weight limit before the skip looks full. Overfilling or exceeding the weight limit results in additional charges at the weighbridge. We recommend using a dedicated inert-waste skip for heavy materials.

Can I put plasterboard in a builders skip?

Plasterboard must be kept separate from general waste under UK waste regulations. Since plasterboard mixed with other waste produces hydrogen sulphide gas when sent to landfill — a hazardous substance. Many skip hire providers now charge a surcharge for plasterboard-contaminated loads, or require dedicated plasterboard-only skips. Ask about our plasterboard disposal options when you book.

What size skip do I need for a self-build or major renovation?

For a self-build or full renovation, the volume of waste changes week by week depending on the phase of work. Most self-builders find a rolling hire arrangement works best — starting with a 10 or 12 yard skip for groundwork and structural phases, then switching to 8 yard skips for fit-out. We can set up a rolling contract so you always have the right size on site. Furthermore, larger sites may benefit from a RORO skip instead.

What materials are banned from builders skips?

For example, the following materials cannot go in a builders skip: asbestos (any form — must be removed by a licensed contractor), tyres, gas cylinders, hazardous chemicals, solvent-based products, fluorescent tubes, liquid paints, and clinical or medical waste. Plasterboard requires a dedicated skip or surcharge. If you are uncertain about any material on your site, contact us before loading.
