What is a Roll-On Roll-Off Skip?
A Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) skip is an open-top steel container that is rolled on and off a specialist flatbed vehicle using a hydraulic system — rather than lifted like a standard skip. This mechanism allows RORO skips to be much larger, ranging from 20 to 40 cubic yards in capacity.
RORO skips are the standard choice for major demolition projects, large construction sites, industrial facilities and any application that generates waste volumes too large for conventional skips. A single 30 yard RORO replaces 4–5 standard skip exchanges, reducing disruption and vehicle movements on site.

Access Requirements for RORO Skip Delivery
RORO delivery vehicles are large HGVs that require specific site conditions. Your site must have: a flat, hard-standing surface capable of supporting up to 32 tonnes; a clear straight run of at least 15–20 metres; no overhead obstructions (cables, bridges, canopies) below 5 metres height; and unrestricted width access. If you are unsure whether your site qualifies, contact our team before booking — we can assess access from satellite imagery or a site visit.
When to Use a RORO Skip
RORO skips are the right choice when standard skips cannot keep up with your waste volumes.
Demolition Projects
Full or partial demolitions generating large volumes of rubble, masonry and structural waste.
Major Construction
New-build residential and commercial developments with sustained high-volume waste output.
Industrial & Manufacturing
Ongoing production waste from factories, distribution centres and industrial facilities.
Large Commercial Strip-Outs
Complete interior strip-outs of large office buildings, hotels and retail spaces.
Land Clearance
Large-scale land clearance generating vegetation, soil and mixed debris ahead of development.
Ongoing Waste Contracts
Rolling RORO contracts with regular swaps for sites that generate continuous high-volume waste.
Fully Licensed & Compliant RORO Collections
Every RORO collection is carried out by a fully licensed waste carrier and includes signed waste transfer notes for your Duty of Care records. Large sites are often subject to environmental inspections — our documentation is always in order. For regulatory guidance on large-scale waste disposal, refer to the Environment Agency waste disposal guidelines.
RORO Skip Hire FAQs
What is a Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) skip?
A Roll-On Roll-Off skip — commonly called a RORO — is an open-top container ranging from 20 to 40 cubic yards in capacity. Unlike a standard skip, which is lifted on and off a lorry by a hook, a RORO is rolled on and off using a specialist vehicle with a hydraulic tipping mechanism. This makes RORO skips suitable for extremely high-volume waste that would require multiple standard skip swaps. They are the standard choice for major construction, demolition and industrial sites.
What access does a RORO skip require?
RORO skips require significantly more space than standard skips. The delivery vehicle needs a straight run of at least 15–20 metres and a hard-standing surface capable of supporting a heavy goods vehicle (typically 26–32 tonnes gross). The surface must be firm, level and free of overhead obstructions such as cables or low bridges. Soft ground, slopes or restricted access will prevent delivery. Contact us to discuss access requirements before booking.
How much waste does a RORO skip hold?
RORO skips range from 20 to 40 cubic yards. A 20 yard RORO holds approximately 180–200 standard bin bags of waste — the equivalent of 3–4 standard 6 yard skips. A 40 yard RORO holds around 360–400 bin bags. For heavy materials such as rubble or soil, weight limits apply regardless of visual fill level. Our team will advise on the right size for your waste volume when you request a quote.
How long does it take to fill a RORO skip?
For an active demolition or large construction site, a 20–30 yard RORO can be filled within 1–3 days. For ongoing commercial waste, many businesses keep a RORO on-site for weeks or months and arrange regular swaps. When you book, tell us the expected fill rate and we will set up a swap schedule that keeps your site clear without unnecessary collections.
What is the difference between a RORO and a standard skip?
Standard skips (2–16 yard) are lifted by a skip lorry and are suitable for domestic and smaller commercial jobs. RORO skips (20–40 yard) are rolled onto a flatbed using a hydraulic system and are designed for high-volume industrial and construction use. ROROi are typically 3–5 times larger than the biggest standard skip, require significantly more access space, and are priced for large-volume work. If a standard skip is sufficient for your needs it will be more cost-effective — our team can advise which is right for your site.
What Site Managers Say About Our RORO Skips
Real reviews from project managers and site supervisors using our RORO skip hire service
"We used a 30 yard RORO for a full commercial strip-out — three floors of office space cleared in four days. The access to our site was tight but the driver was experienced and got it positioned perfectly. Swap-out arranged within 24 hours. Excellent."
"Managing a large residential development and RORO skips are the only practical option for the volumes we generate. Best Skip Hire set up a rolling contract — we get a fresh skip when we call, no fuss, the paperwork is always in order. Would not use anyone else."
