Hire Guide

The standard skip hire period in the UK is 7 days (one week). Extensions are available at £10–20 per day. If your skip is on a public road, the hire period is also constrained by your council road permit, which typically runs 7–14 days.

Knowing how long you can keep your skip helps you plan your project properly and avoid unexpected extension charges. For example, most residential projects fit comfortably within a 7-day hire period, however larger renovations or house clearances may need more time. Here is everything you need to know about skip hire periods in the UK.

Standard Skip Hire Period: 7 Days

The vast majority of skip hire bookings in the UK include a 7-day hire period as standard. This runs from the date we deliver the skip to your address. Most providers count the delivery day and collection day within the 7 days, so you effectively have 5–6 full working days to fill the skip.

A 7-day hire period is sufficient for most home projects including bathroom refits, kitchen removals, single-room clear-outs and garden landscaping. Therefore, if your project is likely to take longer, it is worth booking an extension upfront rather than calling mid-project — extension rates are usually lower when booked in advance.

Extending Your Skip Hire Period

If you need more time, skip companies typically charge an extension fee of £10–20 per day or around £50–80 per additional week. The rate varies between providers and by skip size. Some companies offer fixed 14-day and 21-day hire options at a discounted daily rate compared to day-by-day extensions.

Hire Period Typical Cost Best For
7 days (standard) Included in hire price Single-room projects, garden clearances
14 days +£50–80 Multi-room renovations, house clearances
21 days +£100–150 Large extensions, ongoing building work
Day rate (after 7 days) £10–20/day Short overruns of a few days

Road Permit Duration Constraints

If your skip is placed on a public road or pavement, the hire period is also limited by the council permit duration. Most councils in England and Wales grant skip permits for 7 to 14 days. You cannot keep the skip on the highway beyond the permit expiry date without applying for an extension.

Permit extensions are possible. They require a fresh application to the council, which takes time and costs extra. Additionally, if you need the skip on the road for more than 7 days, ask us to apply for a longer permit at booking. To learn more about permits, see our guide on whether you need a skip permit.

5 Tips to Make the Most of Your 7-Day Hire

  1. 1 Book the skip for the day demolition work starts, not before. You pay from delivery day, so don't waste days on setup.
  2. 2 Pre-sort your waste before delivery. Having it organised means you can fill the skip quickly rather than spending days sorting.
  3. 3 Break down bulky items like furniture and flat-pack units before placing them in the skip. Flat items stack much more efficiently.
  4. 4 If the skip fills early, call for early collection and have a second skip delivered if needed — don't overfill above the fill line.
  5. 5 If you are close to the fill line but the project is not done, book an extension or a second skip in advance rather than waiting until collection day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend my skip hire period?

Yes — most skip companies allow you to extend your hire period by contacting them before the collection date. Extension fees typically run from £10 to £20 per day. Therefore, it is best to request an extension at least 24 hours before your scheduled collection so the company can update their collection schedule and, if the skip is on the road, notify the council about the extended permit period.

What happens if I am not ready when the skip is collected?

If you are not ready for collection on your agreed date, contact the skip company as soon as possible to rearrange. Most companies can delay collection by a day or two without charge, depending on availability. However, if you fail to notify them and they arrive for a collection, you may be charged a failed collection or waiting fee.

Does the road permit duration limit how long I can keep the skip?

Yes — if your skip is on a public road, your local council sets a specific time period for the permit. Most councils grant permits for 7–14 days. However, if you need the skip longer, your skip hire company must apply for a permit extension with the council. This adds to the permit cost and is subject to council approval.

Can I request early collection of my skip?

Yes — if you finish your project ahead of schedule you can request early collection. This is often at no additional charge and helps free up road space if the skip is on the highway. Contact your skip company as soon as you are ready and they will usually collect within 1–2 working days.
